Birthday boy

Hi everyone. Usagi here.
皆さんこんにちは。Usagiです。

Today is Andy's 10th birthday.
When we adopted him we didn't know when his birthday was
but Danny tracked down Andy's breeder using a tattoo Andy has on his ear.
The breeder told us that Andy was born on the 1st July, which is Canada Day, in 2002.

今日はAndyの10歳の誕生日です。
Andyを引き取った時には、Andyがいつ生まれたのか全くわからなかったんですけど、
その後Dannyが、 Andyの耳にあるＩＤのタトゥーからブリーダーさんを見つけだしました。
ブリーダーさんが言うには、Andyの誕生日は2002年の7月1日（カナダデーですね）。

We didn't do anything special today but we went for a walk with 3 of us and took some pictures.
Since he came to live with us his gray hair has increased quite a bit but he is still a happy handsome looking dog.

今日は何も特別なことはしませんでしたが、2人＋１匹でお散歩に行って写真を撮りました。引き取った時に比べるとAndyの毛には白いものがかなり増えましたが、10歳になった今でもAndyはハッピー＆ハンサムなワンコです。

We have been very fortunate to have Andy. Thank you and Happy birthday!

Andyと一緒に暮らすことができて、Usagi＆Dannyはとても幸せ者です。

The Stalker

Hi everyone. Danny here.
皆さんこんにちは。Danny です。

As you may know Andy is a "Mummy's boy" . He loves to be with Usagi.
Sometimes it is too much for Usagi as he is more like a stalker.
When Usagi is takes a shower, he often waits for her just outside of the bathroom door
which surprises Usagi when she opens the door.

もう皆さんご存じと思いますが、Andy は「ママっ子」です。Andy はUsagiと一緒にいるのが大好き。
それが時々行きすぎて、Usagiにストーカー呼ばわりされることも。
Usagiがシャワーを浴びているときなど、浴室のドアに寄り添うようにしてUsagi を待っていて、ドアを開けたUsagiに驚かれることもしょっちゅう。

He sometimes tries to open the door by pushing with his nose
so the door now has lots of his nose prints.

時々、鼻でドアを押して中に入ろうとするため、
ドアにはAndy の鼻跡がたくさんついています。

Doggie Pez

Hi everyone. Danny here.
皆さんこんにちは。Danny です。

This is one of Andy's favorite toys.
It's a "Doggie PEZ" dispenser that has treats in it, which fly out when you pull a trigger.

これ、Andyのお気に入りのおもちゃの一つ、「犬用ＰＥＺ」。中におやつが入っていて、レバーを引くとおやつが飛び出す仕掛けです。

Andy's doggy friends are all so excited about the treats flying out towards them that they try to catch them in the air.
But, Andy just waits for them to hit the floor. Wasting zero energy, always calm... this is Andy's way.
The treat sometimes bounces off his nose before it hits the ground and he doesn't care at all...

Andyの犬友達は、おやつが自分に向かって飛んでくるのに大興奮。ジャンプして空中でキャッチしようと必死になります。
でもAndyは、おやつが地面に落ちてくるのをただ待ってます。無駄なエネルギーは使わず、いつも落ち着いている…これがアンディー。
時々、おやつが地面に落ちる前にAndyの鼻にあたったりしますが、全く気にする様子はありません。。。

Doggie Cup Cakes!

皆さんこんにちは。Usagiです。
先日、Andyを連れて友人のNaoさんの家にお邪魔しました。

The other day, Andy and I visited our friend, Nao.

こちらNaoさんの犬のソフィー＆パック。小さい犬ですが、Naoさんに危険が及びそうと判断すると、人間や大型犬にも果敢に向かっていこうとします。その勇気、Andyにも少し分けてやってほしい…。

These are Nao's dogs. Sophie and Pac. Although they are tiny they would fight bigger dogs or even people if Nao was in danger.
I wish Andy had that kind of guts.

Naoさんの家に行くたび、AndyはSophieのベッドを占領。
Every time Andy visits Nao's house he occupies Sophie's bed.

私の元上司のKenさんもワンちゃん（Kuro）を連れて遊びに来ました。
My former boss, Ken, was also there with his dog, Kuro.

Kuroは犬の保護施設から引き取られました。見た感じ、ジャーマンシェパードの血が流れてるようです。遊び盛りで超元気の推定２歳。いつものんびり（しかももうすぐ１０歳）のAndyは全く遊び相手になりません。
KuroとAndyが一緒にいると、まるで孫とおじいちゃんみたい…。

Kuro was adopted from a dog rescue shelter. It seems that he is German Shepherd cross.　We believe Kuro to be 2 years old and he is extremely energetic. Andy, who is always easy going and almost 10 years old, can't be a play mate with Kuro.
When they are together they look like grandpa and grandson.

おやつの後はお昼寝タイム。改めてみると、本当に大きい犬。。。Kenさんの息子さん（もうすぐ中学生）と同じサイズだよ。

It is often said that pets take after their owners (or visa versa?)
Andy sometimes sleeps exactly like Usagi does.
Like this, with his mouth open and with his eyes half opened when he is deep in sleep.

ペットは飼い主に似る（または、その反対？）と言いますが、
アンディーは時々、寝顔がＵｓａgiｎそっくりです。
こんな感じで、口をあけて、目も半開きの状態で、爆睡。

皆さんこんにちは。Usagiです。
前回のポストから半年以上たってしまいました…。
もうブログの継続はギブアップしようかと思ったのですが
今でも時々「ブログ楽しみにしてるのに～」という声をいただき、

ところで、
つい最近まで、Usagiは2カ月ちょっと家を空けておりました。
その間、Dannyと、ドッグシッターさんが
しっかりとアンディーの面倒を見てくれていました。
2ヶ月もほったらかしにして、もう私のことなんか覚えてないかも
などと心配していましたが、
帰宅したら、いつも通りの「熱烈歓迎」ぶり。。。

By the way, until recently I was away for more than 2 months.
While I was away Danny and a dog sitter were taking good care of Andy.
I was worried that Andy would forget about me in the 2 months
but when I got home he greeted me with great enthusiasm.

ずいぶん長いこと留守にしてしまったので、お土産も奮発しました。。。
犬用カップケーキの素、犬用たいやき、いちごタルトなどなど、
アンディーの大好きなものばかり。。
2カ月以上の空白が、これで埋められればいいのですが。。。

I brought lots of souvenirs for Andy
such as cup cake mix for dogs, Taiyaki(fish shaped pan cake)
and berry tart for dogs. All are Andy's favorites.
I hope he forgives me being away for 2 months.

Secret Garden

皆さんこんにちは。Ｕｓａｇｉです。

最近はいい天気が続いてます。なんだかすっかり初夏の陽気で、Ａｎｄｙもベランダでのお昼寝が日課になりました。しかし、それにしても、このところＡｎｄｙが１日に何度もベランダに出て行くんです。怪しい…。。と思っていたら、さっき、お隣さんから写真がメールされてきました。どうやら、ここ最近、お隣さんがベランダでガーデニングをするたびに、Ａｎｄyが出てきて作業を見学していたらしいんです。

The days have been wonderful recently. We are having an early summer so Andy is now enjoying a nap on the sunny balcony every day. However, during the last couple of days he was going out on the balcony a bit too often so I began to think he might be up to something. A little later I received an email with a picture from the couple next door (yes, the owner of those two cats you may remember.) Apparently, Andy has been going out to secretly watch them work in their garden.

ちなみに、この花壇はベジタブルガーデンになるそうで、「ビーンズ」や「ホウレンソウ」といった小さな札があちこちに。食べ物が生きがいの犬なので、もしかしたら、どこに何の野菜が生えるのかチェックしていたのかも。。。


They planted a variety of vegetables, so there are now name tags like “beans” and “spinach” in the soil. Andy, who lives for food, could have been checking which vegetables will be in which spot.

Ice Hockey?

みなさんこんにちは。Ｄａｎｎｙです。

このところ、街中がホッケーの話題でもちきりです。というのも、地元のホッケーチームが試合のファイナルまで勝ち進んだからです。まるでオリンピックが再び始まったかのような盛り上がりで、街には「今日は試合の（中継を見る）ために５時で閉店します」なんて店も。ファイナルでは、７回の試合のうち、先に４回勝利した方が優勝です。そして今日、その第１回戦が行われ、地元のチームが勝利しました！


Hey everyone. Danny here.

It seems anyone in our city is talking about ice hockey. That’s because the our local team has made it too the finals. You'd think the Olympics were happening, there's so much excitement. There are even some stores with signs up saying “We close at 5 due to the match”
To win the finals the team will have to win 4 out of a series of 7 matches. Tonight was the first match and our Team won!


そして、試合のテレビ中継が終わったとたん、近所では喜びに沸いた人たちが勝利の花火を上げ始めました。皆さん覚えていらっしゃるかと思いますが、Ａｎｄyは花火の音が大嫌い。パン！パン！と音が鳴り始めたとたん、Ｕｓａｇｉのいるデスクへ直行！


Then, just after the live coverage of the match on TV had finished, people around our place celebrated by setting off fireworks. As you may remember Andy really doesn’t like the sound of fireworks. As soon as he heard the first explosions “Bang! Bang!” he rushed to Usagi’s work table.

しかし、Ｕｓａｇｉのデスクは花火の音が入ってくるベランダに近いため我慢できなかったらしく、ベランダから一番離れた場所＝私の仕事エリアにやってきて、机の下にもぐりこみました。

いつもはＵｓａｇｉの後ばかり追いかけていて、私のことなど眼中にないＡｎｄyですが、花火の夜だけは、まるで私の犬みたいです。

However, Usagi’s table is close to the balcony where those noise was coming from so he decided to come to my work area which happens to be the area furthest from the balcony and hid under my desk.

Andy is always following Usagi and usually doesn't pay me much attention but he looks like MY dog when fireworks are around.

Spring is here

Hello everyone. Usagi here.

Although it is still quite cool in the mornings and nights, several kinds of cherry blossoms have already started to bloom. Now double-flowered cherry trees are in full bloom.

朝晩はまだ肌寒いですが、４月に入ってから色々な種類の桜が咲き始め、今は八重桜が満開。

Having a lot of sunny weather and longer daylight hours we now feel that spring has come (finally). Andy is running around on the grass during his daily walks, fully enjoying spring.

晴天の日が多くなり、日照時間が長くなると、「やっと春が来たな～」という気分になります。Ａｎｄｙも、散歩中に芝生の上を走り回って春を満喫してます。

Pets after the quake

Hi, Danny here.

In the aftermath of the recent earthquake in Japan I came across some news about a dog. It was found floating in the ocean on the roof of a house, 3 weeks after the quake/tsunami and was rescued. Now she has been reunited with her owner. What a lucky dog.
Usagi also found links to pictures shed like to share of pets at evacuee centers in Japan.

こんにちは。Ｄａｎｎｙです。

震災後に、がれきに乗ったまま３週間も海を漂っていた犬が救助されたというニュースを見ました。そして昨日、ワンちゃんは飼い主さんと再会を果たしたそうです。本当にラッキーな犬ですね。

Pray for Japan

We wish to express our sympathy for all the victims of the major earthquake and tsunami, and those who suffered from the events in Japan.

It is heart wrenching to see the devastating images from Japan, let alone thinking about the people working in the nuclear plant trying to minimize the damage. While we live far from Japan, we will still think of what we can do to support those people from the devastated areas and to help rebuilding those towns.

被災地の映像を見るたびに、そして、被害を最小限にとどめるために体を張って原発で働いている人々を思うたび、本当に心が痛みます。日本から離れて暮らしてはいますが、被災された方々と、今後の復興のために、微力ではありますが私たちにもできることを考えていきたいと思っています。

Naptime

Every time we go to a pet supply store Usagi buys something unnecessary. Some things just make me want to yell that's just useless. The other day she bought a “Doggie Pillow”. She put it on Andy’s bed and tried to teach him how to use it. But Andy thought he had gotten a new stuffed toy to bite it which made Usagi upset.

ペット用品のお店に行くたびに、ついつい余計なものまで買ってしまうＵｓａgi。。。中には、こんなの本当に必要ですかぁ？？と叫んでしまいそうなものも。この間は「犬用枕」なるものを購入。Ａｎｄｙのベッドに置いて使い方を教えようとしますが、Ａｎｄyは「新しいおもちゃか？！」と、枕を噛み、Ｕｓａｇｉに怒られる始末。

I thought it would be garbage soon, but then Andy’s attitude towards the pillow changed. For the first few days he would try to bite the pillow, then he started ignoring the pillow. Then a few days later he started to use it.

すぐに不用品としてごみ箱行きだと思いましたが、しばらくすると変化が。はじめは枕を噛もうとしていましたが、そのうちに枕を無視するようになり、数日後、気がつくと枕を使いはじめていました。


He likes to keep it to the side of his bed and uses it when he's having a nap.

ベッドの上ではなく、すぐ外れたところに枕を置くのが好きなようで、今では昼寝の友になっています。

Rainy Days

It rains a lot here recently. It seems Andy got fed up with this weather because he doesn’t like walking in rain.

このところ雨の日が続いています。雨の中をお散歩するのが大嫌いなAndyは、このお天気にうんざりしている様子。

Because of the bright red color, a lot of people say “You look like a Super Hero! (Ha ha ha)” I get the feeling that Andy thinks people are making fun of him, laughing as he walks by. To be fair he has been wearing it for 2 years and it is starting to get worn out.

Andyのレインコートは真っ赤な色をしているので、みんなに「それを着てると、まるで正義の味方みたい（笑）！」と言われます。散歩中すれ違う人にまで「クスッ」と笑われたりして、Andyにしてみたら、なんだか笑い物になっている気分なのかもしれません。それに、このコートは２年も着ているので、もうヨレヨレなんです。


We were thinking he needed a new coat (in a different color), when our friend Nao, who has miracle hands that can make anything, told us she could make a rain jacket for Andy!

そろそろ新しいコートが必要かな（今度は違う色で）と思っていた時、知り合いのNaoさん（何でも作れる魔法の手を持ってる人です）が、Andyのためにレインコートを作ってくれることになりました！


It’s a tailor made coat using Andy's measurements, so it is just the right size for him. It is made from a material used to make umbrellas, so it repels water. I hope Andy can enjoy walking in rain with this new and more comfortable jacket.

サイズを測って作ったオーダーメイドだからAndyの体にぴったり。傘の素材を使っているので、防水も完璧です！これで少しは雨の日のお散歩を楽しんでくれるといいのですが。

A Present for Andy

Danny here,

This Christmas, Andy got one of his favorite toys. The “squeaking Toast” with the strange face. Andy is so happy biting the toast and he shakes it madly. When he is playing with it, Usagi or I need to keep an eye on him otherwise he tears into it and within minutes eats the cotton inside of it.

今年のクリスマス、Andyはお気に入りのおもちゃをゲットしました。
とってもヘンな顔の「特大トースト」。くわえると「キューキュー」と鳴きま す。Andyはくわえたトーストをブンブン振り回して、超ゴキゲン。ただ、ほおっておくと１０分もしないうちにトーストを引きちぎって中のコットンを食べ てしまうので、このおもちゃで遊ぶ時は、必ず私かUsagiが一緒です。

It’s only been 3 days since we gave him this toast and already he's destroyed the squeaker part so the toast is now just like a cushion. Still, Andy loves his toast. After he plays with it, he holds it with his front paws and naps with it.

Andyにこのトーストをプレゼントしてまだ３日ですが、中の「キューキュー」鳴く装置？は1日目にして噛んで壊してしまい、今はただのクッションのよう。それでもAndyはこのおもちゃが大好き。遊んだ後はトーストを前足で抱えて、一緒に昼寝しています。

It was the night before Christmas

Hello everyone. It’s Usagi here.

皆さんこんにちは。Usagiです。

Before dawn, I heard that Andy was walking in the living room. I thought he needed some water, but what I heard was him rustling paper, instead of drinking water. I had a suspicious feeling and checked what he was doing. I found Andy poking the Christmas presents under the tree. When I said “Oi!” he looked at me with a kind of a guilty face and quietly went back to his bed. I wonder if even dogs wonder what those presents are.

夜明け前に、Andyがリビングに歩いて行く足音がしたので、水でも飲んでいるのだろうと思ったら、「ペチャペチャ」と水を飲む音の代わりに、カサカサと 紙を触るような音が。変だなと思い、そっとリビングを覗いてみると、Andyがクリスマスツリーの下に積んであるプレゼントを鼻でつついるところでした。 「おい」と声をかけると、「…ごめん」という顔をして、こそこそと自分のベッドへもどって行きました。犬でもプレゼントが気になるのでしょうか。。。

More snow

Hello everyone. It’s Usagi here.

皆さんこんにちは。Usagiです。

Since we had the first snow it has been sunny for several days, but it’s been extremely cold. On one day in particular the maximum temperature was minus 4 degrees.

初雪から３～４日は晴れの日が続きましたが、日中の最高気温がマイナス４度なんて日もあり、その寒さたるや半端ではありませんでした。

We were just thinking “well, it was lucky there wasn't a lot of snow” Then, today there was a huge snow fall! Andy was out on the balcony to taste the new snow (he loves eating snow). During his walk, he leaped into the thick new snow, enjoying the early arrival of winter.

まぁ、寒くても、雪が積もるよりはいいか…と思っていた矢先、今日またドカ雪が降りました！Andyは、さっそくベランダに出て新雪を味見（Andyは雪を食べるのが好きなんです）。散歩中も、積もったばかりの雪の中にドカドカと入って行き、ひと足早い冬を満喫していました。

Snow in Autumn

Hi , Danny here.

皆さんこんにちは。Dannyです。

Yesterday, I woke up and looked outside through the window, and saw the area covered with snow. It is still November but we have already had our first snow. Andy couldn't wait to go for a walk as he loves snow.

昨日の朝、目を覚まして窓の外を見ると…そこには一面の雪景色が広がっていました。まだ11月なのに、初雪です。雪が大好きなAndyは、早く散歩に出たくてしょうがない様子。

The weather forecast says that during the week the temperature will drop below zero degrees.
This winter will be so cold…

天気予報を見たら、今週は最高気温が氷点下の日もあると言ってました。今年の冬は、かなり寒くなりそうです。。。

They are former actors who appeared in the movie “Little Women” (1994), like little celebrities. They have already retired from the entertainment industry but are still so gorgeous that we can’t believe that they are 17 years old.

なんと、彼らは元俳優。1994年に公開された映画「若草物語」にも出演した、ちょっとしたセレブです。すでに業界からは引退しましたが、もう17歳というのが信じられないほど、美しい猫ちゃん達です。

Andy is good with cats, but when Andy first met them on our balcony, both Frieda & Radar ran away to their apartment. Sure, it would be very scary to see this huge dog who has a head as big as your body.

Andyは猫が大好き。ですが、Andyが初めてお隣の猫ちゃんたちとベランダで顔を合わせた時は、フリーダもレイダーも一目散に部屋に逃げ帰りました。頭だけで彼らの体のサイズくらいある犬が現れたのだから、そうとう怖かったのでしょう。。。

However, since then the distance between Andy and the 2 cats getting (although very slowly but surely) shorter. When Frieda sees Andy on the balcony she still doesn’t want get too close to him but she jumps on the dividing garden wall and they stare at each other for a long time. Whereas Radar crosses the garden half way to examine Andy, then when Andy pretends to be “Not interested in you” Radar almost traverses the whole garden to get onto our balcony.

しかし、その後、少～しずつですが、Andyと猫ちゃんたちの距離は近くなってきました。フリーダちゃんは、ベランダで顔を合わせると、Andyの姿がよく見 えるよう花壇に上って、お互いじぃ～～～っと見つめあってます。。。レイダーくんは、Andyがベランダにいると、花壇の中まで歩いてきてAndyの様子 を伺い、Andyが「知らん顔するふり」をすると、こちらのベランダに入る直前まで近づくようになりました。

Halloween is coming

Hi everyone. It’s Danny here.

みなさんこんにちは。Dannyです。

The horror week for Andy is beginning again. Yes, it’s Halloween and he doesn’t like fireworks.

今年もAndyにとっての恐怖の１週間がやってきました。そう、ハロウィンです。アンディは、ハロウィンに付き物の花火が大の苦手なんです。

If you　are visiting　this　site　from　Japan,　you　would　be　surprise　to know that　in　Canada　we　can　only use fireworks　at home on particular days decided by law (Another thing to know is that fireworks for home use here are bigger and louder compared to those sold in Japan). The town we live in has a regulation which says we can enjoy fireworks at home only during the Halloween season. So now we can see lots of stores with huge “FIREWORKS” signs around town.

日本からこのブログを訪問していただいている方は驚かれるかもしれませんが、カナダでは、家庭で花火をしていい日というのが法律で決められています（さらに、ここの家庭用花火は、日本で売られているものに比べてサイズも音も数倍大きいです）。私たちが住む街のレギュレーションでは、家庭で花火を楽しめるのは、１年のうちでハロウィンの時期だけ。なので、いま街には「花火あります！」の大きな看板を掲げたショップがそこらじゅうに出現しています。

Halloween is still a week away but people are already setting off fireworks, and the noise makes Andy very anxious. Just one “Bang” will have Andy on his feet and running to Usagi. Then, he just follows Usagi around wherever she goes. When he hears 2 or 3 fireworks he hides under the table where Usagi is working and refuses to go for a walk with me. (though he always refuses to go for a walk with me anyway)

ハロウィンまでまだ1週間ありますが、すでに近所のあちこちから花火の音がきこえ、Andyはすっかり不安な気分に。ほんの一発の「パン！」という音を聞いただけでUsagiのもとへ逃げ、その後はとにかくUsagiがどこに行くにも後をつけています。花火が２～３発いっぺんに音を立てた時などは、Usagiが仕事をしている机の下にもぐりこんで、私と散歩に出るのも拒否…（まぁ、私と散歩に行きたがらないのはいつものことですが）。

Our friends, who have a dog, actually leave town for Halloween every year as their dog gets really nervous. We may do this next year.

近所に住む友人は、ペットの犬が花火の音でかなりナーバスになるので、毎年ハロウィンには犬と一緒に旅行に出かけてしまいます。私たちも来年はそうしようかな。
